Let’s Talk About Food, Baby!

I found this food survey over at Errign’s wonderful blog (go check it out!) and thought it would be fun to do. Be sure and let me know if you fill it out as well.. I’d love to see your answers!

How do you take your coffee/tea? I drink both hot & iced coffee black with just a tiny bit of soy or almond milk.

How do you like your eggs? I only eat egg whites and just make them omelet style in a pan and then wrap ‘em in pita bread. Yum!

Favorite breakfast food: Egg whites and pita bread!

Peanut butter: Smooth or crunchy? Crunchy! Always.

What kind of dressing on your salad? Usually I’ll just go for balsamic or oil & vinegar. Sometimes I get a strong craving for ranch or thousand island though and I just go with it. :]

Coke or Pepsi? Neither. I haven’t had soda in such a long time. I’m strictly a water drinker now.

You’re feeling lazy, what do you make? Whole wheat pasta with marinara sauce.

You’re feeling really lazy. What kind of pizza do you order? I love Kashi’s thin crust Margherita pizza. Nothing easier than putting a pizza in the oven when you’re feeling super lazy!

You feel like cooking. What do you make? I find a recipe from blogs I read. They always turn out amazing! A couple of my all time favorites:

[ vegan tofu tikka masala from The Healthy Diary ]

[ peanut noodle bowl from (never home) maker ]

Do any foods bring back good memories? Beanie weenies (ate these all the time when I was a kid.. except now it’s veggie dogs.), pizza (Greg & I went out for pizza a lot when we were first dating).

Do any foods bring back bad memories? Not really. One time I got sick after eating a ton of goji berries and I couldn’t eat them for a long time after that, but it’s all good now.

Is there a food you refuse to eat? CELERY. Gah-ross!

What was your favorite food as a child? Peanut butter sandwiches, Kid Cuisine frozen meals, tater tots, chicken nuggets. Obviously I didn’t eat very healthy when I was a wee one.

Is there a food that you hated as a child but now like? Jelly. I would freak out if there was jelly on my peanut butter sandwich but now I love it! I also used to hate mushrooms, peppers and onions but love them now.

Favorite junk food: Salt & vinegar chips! I cannot buy a bag because it will be gone in minutes. Also, movie theater popcorn is a weakness of mine. Sometimes (okay, pretty much all the time) my decision to go to the movies is strongly influenced by the thought of getting popcorn. So bad, but so good!

Do you have any weird food habits? I have to finish a certain group of food before I move on to the next. For example, if I have a baked potato, asparagus and salad on my plate I need to finish all the asparagus before I move on to the potato and all that before I eat the salad. It’s weird and I’m getting better about mixing up my foods a bit.

Favorite dessert? I love cake batter frozen yogurt with cheesecake and cookie dough bites. Also, plain cheesecake is pretty amazing as well.

Ripped In 30: Q & A

Since finishing Ripped In 30, I’ve gotten a few questions about the workouts and meal plan so I thought I’d do a little question and answer post. If there’s something I didn’t cover here and you want to know about just ask in the comments or e-mail me and I will add it to the post!

How many days did you actually workout?
I did each level on Monday through Friday and had rest days on Saturday and Sunday. I did the program for 30 days as far as meal plans, but only actually worked out for 20 of those days.

What are you going to do next now that you’ve finished Ripped In 30?
I don’t really have a plan at this point. I am just rotating some of the workout DVDs I have. I will continue with the meal plan because since I’m used to it now and have an eating schedule I never get super hungry or dips in energy. I mostly eat whole, clean foods in healthy portion sizes and feel better overall.

Where do you find Ezekiel bread?
It’s located in the freezer section of health food stores. I can find it ay my local Kroger’s in their natural foods section so check your normal grocery store as well. It is always frozen since it has no preservatives so check the freezers.

What did you eat while you were doing the challenge?
I tracked all my meals using The Daily Plate. I started the challenge on May 16 and ended on June 10 so check those diaries on those dates to see what I was eating during the program.

How did you track your calories burned while doing the challenge?
I used my Polar FT7 heart rate monitor (Amazon affiliate link). I love this watch! The chest strap is comfortable and the watch is small and don’t annoy me at all. It stores up to 99 workouts and gives you weekly calories burned which I love.

What are some sample examples of meals you ate?
I’m a really picky eater and once I find something I like I eat it every day. I’m not the best person to ask as far as variety is concerned, but here are a few things I ate: pita pizzas, egg whites on Ezekiel toast, sweet potatoes, baked potatoes with greek yogurt, veggie stir-fry using one tablespoon of this sauce & quinoa, pistachios, almond butter and a variety of fruits & veggies.

Even though I was on the meal plan, I still indulged every once in awhile. Like Greg & I went out for Chinese food one day. I brought my own tupperware bowl and once the food arrived I halved it immediately. This way I kept my portion size in check and also had lunch for the next day. It’s totally okay to have something you like every once in awhile as long as it’s not a daily thing.

*Disclaimer: I’m not a health professional, doctor, or nutritionist. What I did during this workout may not be the best for you. I just got great results and like to share how I did things during this challenge.

Burritos, Yogurt and A Cubicle

This week we have been moving to another office building and it has been insane. Nothing was organized, clean or working when we got to the new space, so it has been a weird week. But I do have a shiny new cubicle now and I am just so excited you have no idea. Haha.

I saw these Evol burritos at the grocery store the other day. The packaging caught my eye and they were decently priced so I grabbed a few for mornings when I was low on time. I’m glad I did because they are so good. I just throw one in my purse and microwave it at work.. you seriously couldn’t tell it was a frozen burrito. It was only 230 calories, 3.5g of fat, 6g fiber & 12g protein!

My lunches have been really good at work too and I loved today’s menu: eggplant w/marinara, steamed zucchini, squash, broccoli & carrots, asian veggies, rice, green beans and mashed potatoes. I may have went a lil’ crazy with lunch today, but everything was lookin’ so good that I just couldn’t help it. Those aren’t my plates in the background by the way.. I wasn’t that hungry :]

After lunch we moved and organized some more and I treated myself to a frozen yogurt. I got tart yogurt with blackberries, strawberries and blueberries. MMM! It was so good!

After work I was checking my bookmarked blogs when I saw that Pretty Fit, Pretty Healthy had tagged me for this lil’ survey! I was so happy because it is definitely one of my favorite healthy living blogs.. thanks for the tag! :]

Here are the questions to answer:

1. What made you decide to start getting healthy?
I got my current job as a designer at a local university and one of the perks was free lunch in the dining halls. Let’s just say I went a little overboard and took on as many french fries, sodas and greasy foods I could handle. My clothes were getting super tight and I just didn’t feel good. I became friends with our student nutritionist and learned about making healthier choices in the dining halls and got really interested in nutrition, working out & making healthier choices.

2. What’s your idea of a food splurge? Shopping splurge?
Food splurge: I don’t really do food splurges.. I just kinda eat what I want but make sure it all balances out. I’ll eat healthier during that day except for that meal and work out more for instance.
Shopping splurge: I have a hard time splurging when shopping so it would most likely be an essential. I’m actually getting ready to go to Zappos and check out their boots…

3. Someone gave you $1000. Spend it? Save it? Spend it for what/save it for what?
I would probably spend it on fencing in our backyard so Pep can run around and have fun with our neighbors dogs and get rid of some of that energy!

4. What’s your favorite holiday? Why?
I love Halloween! This year was the best because it was our first Halloween in our house so we got to decorate and give out candy to all the trick-or-treaters. Too much fun!

5. What’s your favorite seasonal food? It can be from any season.
Tofurky! Haha, I seriously love that stuff it is way too good.

6. Describe your perfect day off.
Sleeping in a little, heading to the park to walk with my husband & pup, eating good food and watching movies. I’m boring like that, but that sounds perfect right now! :]

Well, I’m off to make a quick stir-fry and hang out with Greg. Tomorrow is a half day at work and then the weekend!
