Grocery Haul and Sloppy Joes

Today I just went to my local co-op, Three Rivers Market, to stock up on some basics from their bulk bins that I had been needing. I still had quite a bit of groceries left over from my Kroger trip last week, but will probably have to go there later in the week.

Here’s what I got from the co-op:

Ezekiel sprouted burger buns, local salsa (Greg’s), Tex Mex Trail Mix (so good!), sunflower seeds, corn meal, 4 plums, rolled oats, TVP and one Alternative Baking Company peanut butter cookie that’s not pictured because it didn’t survive the ride home :]

I spent $21.18. The salsa was kind pricey ($4, but it’s local & Greg has high society tastes haha), the buns ($3.85) and the pound of TVP I bought ($4.35). Everything else was organic and really cheap. I love bulk bins!

I came home and made some sloppy joes with what I’d bought. I used to buy the Morningstar veggie crumbles when I made sloppy joes or chili until I found out about TVP (Textured Vegetable Protein).

Just pour some into a bowl & fill with water. Wait about 5-7 minutes and then drain the water out. You’re left with basically the same stuff as what you’d buy in the freezer aisle, but much cheaper! You can use this for chili, tacos, spaghetti sauce.. anywhere you’d use ground beef normally.

I mixed the TVP with a can of Manwich sauce on medium heat for a couple of minutes. I had a can left in the pantry which is why I used it, but in the future I will be making my own. The Ezekiel buns were good, but so thick.. it was almost too much.

I served it with salad I had made a huge bowl of the night before. It was spinach, cucumbers, tomatoes, mushrooms, artichoke hearts, sunflower seeds, avocado and balsamic vinegar. Oh man, it was so good!

I don’t know if it’s because I stayed up so late last night, but I could not get it together today! I usually don’t drink coffee on the weekends but had three cups today! Crazy. Tonight I am catching up on some shows with Hulu and going to bed early so I’ll be refreshed and ready for Monday mornin’!
